One of the oldest streets in Belfast is Ann Street, originally spelled "Anne". Before that it was known as Back Street as it was at the 'back' of High Street. The town grew up around the river Farset.

Previously, Ann Street in Belfast was known as Back Street, as High Street was technically in front of it. Today both of these streets hold many historic buildings as well as shops and restaurants. Ann Street was once home to both the Artillery Barracks and Cooney's Court, though both of these establishments are no longer there. High Street holds one of the town's most distinctive buildings.
